PowerPC 是一种RISC架构的CPU，其基本的设计源自IBM的POWER（Performance Optimized With Enhanced RISC 的缩写）架构。POWER是1991年，Apple、IBM、Motorola组成的AIM联盟所发展出的微处理器架构。PowerPC是整个AIM联盟平台的一部分，并且是到目前为止唯一的一部分。

PowerPC 的历史可以追溯到早在1990年随RISC System/6000一起被介绍的IBM POWER架构。该设计是从早期的RISC架构（比如IBM 801）与MIPS架构的处理器得到灵感的。
